Age of Wonders 3 Starting Units Options: The Balance is Key

When it comes to Age of Wonders 3, one of the most debated topics among players is the starting units options. Some argue that certain combinations are unbalanced and favor specific playstyles, while others believe that the game's design ensures a level playing field.

One point often made by critics of the starting units system is that it's possible to have wonky or imbalanced starting units. However, I agree with many players who think this isn't nearly as common as one might think. In fact, without any T2 units in the mix and with so many slots to fill, there is still a significant amount of gold left over that needs to be spent.

Even if it was possible to start with an all-T1 lineup, you would never not be compensated with archers or other essential units. The total gold value allotted for starting units would not be depleted. Furthermore, it's not possible to start with zero T2 units - the game simply wouldn't allow it.

Randomized starting units, much like randomized research skills at the beginning of the game, can and do change a lot based on pure RNG. This randomness can lead to significant differences in the early game, particularly when playing as a civilization that relies heavily on ranged units against the AI.

For example, as a High Elf player, I've had both starting lineups featuring 2 swordsmen, 2 initiates and 1 pikeman, as well as ones with 2 storm sisters, 2 longbowmen and 1 initiate. This flexibility can lead to different playstyles and strategies, but ultimately, the early game is less forgiving without easily accessible firepower.

Iguana's comment that 'the units are balanced by gold and type' resonates deeply. In my own experience playing a few Battle starts so far, I've started with a couple of T3 units, but lacked other essential units like T1 archers. This highlights the importance of finding a balance between unit types and gold allocation.

While some players may still feel that certain starting units combinations are unbalanced, I believe that Age of Wonders 3's design ensures that every civilization has its unique strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, it's up to each player to adapt and find their own way to success.
